The Future
A teeny-weeny brand update!
2020 has been *checks notes* disgusting!
If the global pandemic hasn’t been your only focus, there have been countless social injustices that have been springing up in public awareness. From the global black lives matter movement, the abhorrent treatment of Muslims in China, the on-going crisis in Congo, the rise of gender based violence in Southern Africa, the police brutality and, now, murder of innocent protesters in Nigeria and the British government co-signing child poverty in the UK, to name a few . This year has been extremely heavy, and the information has been hard to digest and take in.
As a designer and creative, I often feel useless when it comes to these issues, but through my work, I want to be able to raise awareness and spark a constructive dialogue on all my platforms. I wouldn’t describe myself as activist, but I wouldn’t be a human if I didn’t feel the urge to want to do something. Not just about these specific events, but about all the injustices everywhere. Even the ones that aren’t widely reported in the media.
Going forward, the work I create will be more considered than ever, thoroughly researched and about issues that are important to me and my community. I have always used my personal design projects as a tool to explore and communicate my thoughts and feelings on topics that are not often spoken about openly and freely, particularly in my community and I will be continuing to do this.
What does the future hold?
The core values of my design practice are still the same! And the reason why I wanted to embark on this journey hasn’t changed either. But I am going to do a little ‘re-brand’ of sorts.
All new work will be accompanied by researched, and academically referenced journal posts, raising awareness on the subjects that influence my work.
I’ll be sharing a lot more content, research, work in progress, further reading etc on all my platforms to encourage you all to start and engage in conversations.
I’ll be working on garments that are more inclusive and inline with my aesthetic. To me there’s no such thing as womenswear and menswear, everything will fall under the same catergory – genderless, human wear. (Who says we have to live inside society’s parameters!)
There will be no schedule, no rules, no expectations – work will emerge as and when something needs to be said. Some may be ready-to-wear garments, some may be made-to-measure garments, some may be sculpture, some may be jewellery and some may be none of the above.
While this year isn’t what I expected, or planned, I am taking this opportunity to do what I think needs to be done.
And I hope you will all follow me on this journey.
